Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) staff published a notification on a draft for infant bath tubs on 22 July 2015. The proposed rule would establish a safety standard for infant bath tubs under section 104 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.

An “infant bath tub” is described as a “tub, enclosure, or other similar product intended to hold water and be placed into an adult bath tub, sink, or on top of other surfaces to provide support or containment, or both, for an infant in a reclining, sitting, or standing position during bathing by a caregiver.”
• A clarification to the cycling test for latching/locking mechanisms
• A rationale in the appendix for the latching/locking mechanism clarification
• A change to the test method for the static load requirement
• Modified warning language applied on the product
• Modified language within the instructional literature
• The addition of warning label figures

The draft NPR must be voted upon by the CPSC Commissioners. If approved, the NPR will be published within the federal register at which point interested parties may provide comments to the CPSC staff.
