Swedish agency finds hazardous chemicals in toys during random inspection

On 23 March 2016, Swedish Chemicals Agency (Kemi) published toy surveillance report on toys in 2015 finding more than one in seven toys contain hazardous chemicals at prohibited level. The detection rate for the hazardous substances exceeds 15%, including phthalates, lead, cadmium and SCCP.
 
Pursuant to REACH Regulation, POP Regulation and toy safety directive, Kemi conducted a random inspection of toys on the market. The result showed 17 of 112 toys (from 29 countries) contained hazardous chemicals upon analysis and testing as the following:

1	The product was detected to contain cadmium exceeding limits set forth in Annex XVII to REACH Regulation in its packaging.
5	The products contain prohibited SCCP not comply with Regulation (EC) No 850/2004 (POP Regulation).
8	Electrical toys contain dangerous levels of lead not complying with RoHS Directive.

 
Businesses for the aforesaid products have stopped the sale for such products. Kemi will further notify Environmental Prosecutors of the inspection results of seven businesses. Ii will continue to strengthen regulation on hazardous chemicals in toys for this year.
