Minnesota bans use of certain flame retardants in children’s products and upholstered residential furniture

U.S. Minnesota passed Bill SF1215 to prohibit the use of certain flame retardants in children’s products and upholstered residential furniture on 19 May 2015.

 
According to the most recent version of the proposal, manufacturers and wholesalers shall not manufacture or sell in this state a children’s product or upholstered residential furniture that containing,  in amounts greater than 1000 ppm in any product component, the following flame retardants: Tris (1,3-dichloro-2propyl) phosphate (TDCPP), Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), Decabromodiphenyl ether, Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD). The above requirements are applicable to wholesalers since 1 July 2019.

 

 
U.S. always has strict regulation on flame retardants in children’s products and upholstered residential furniture. The flame retardants are added to state legislations successively once they are confirmed harmful to fetal development, carcinogenic or that it will lead to malformation and reproductive toxicity. On 11 March 2015, House of Representatives in Washington passed a proposal HB1174 to ban use of flame retardants in children’s products and upholstered residential furniture, which is now passed as a resolution. On 30 September 2014, California governor signed the SB 1019 Upholstered Residential Furniture: Flame Retardants as a bill; on 18 September 2014, California governor signed Bill A4741-2013 (S3703-B) to ban TDCPP and TCEP in children’s products.
