Nike and Li-Ning fail to meet detox commitments

The third edition of the Detox Catwalk has been released to assess the steps taken by fashion brands to fulfil their commitments. The report shows some fashion giants like Inditex, H&M and Benetton are ahead of the curve and on track to meet their commitments. However, Li-Ning, Nike, Esprit and some other brands fail to do so.
 
Greenpeace launched its “Detox My Fashion” campaign in July 2011 to address this problem, asking the textile industry to urgently take responsibility for its contribution to toxic pollution. Since its launch in 2011, there are more than 70 brands and suppliers committing to phase out 11 hazardous chemicals from the supply chain by 2020.
 
CATWALK CRITERIA
1. Detox 2020 plan - a system for eliminating hazardous chemicals that is proactive and precautionary.
2. PFC elimination - substituting hazardous PFCs with safer alternatives.
3. Transparency - disclosing information on suppliers and the hazardous chemicals they discharge.
Esprit, Limited Brands, Li-Ning and Nike earned the lowest marks of the 19 brands assessed. According to the report, Nike failed to satisfy any of the three assessed criteria. Sadly, while the sector is moving to Detox, Armani, Bestseller, Diesel, D&G, GAP, Hermes, LVMH Group/Christian Dior Couture, Metersbonwe, PVH, VAncl and Versace continue to avoid tackling the problem with the seriousness it deserves.
