Shanghai (China) Inspection and Quarantine Bureau published 12 typical cases for inspection and supervision on entry-exit industrial goods by Shanghai Port of 2015 on 1 March 2016. It is notable that nine batches of HERMES garments had been destroyed or returned in a row due to their violations against the national standards of China for textile products.

It is known that Shanghai Authority found HERMES garments non-compliant as dangerous levels of formaldehyde are present in the products in Jan. to March of 2015. As set forth in the national standard of China GB 18401-2010 National General Safety Technical Code for Textile Products, formaldehyde present in the textile products which come into direct contact with skin shall not be greater than 75mg/kg. However, the sampling inspection result shows the most severe violation contains the greatest level of formaldehyde as high as 105mg/kg, which is 1.5 times of that provided in the relevant standards. Those nine batches of HERMES garments were all manufactured in France. Shanghai Authority had destroyed or returned the aforesaid products.

In textile industry, formaldehyde is often used in colouring, fixation or for enhancing anti-wrinkle and shrinkproof effectiveness in fibre and fabric products. It is likely to be present in 100% cotton knitting through anti-wrinkle treatment, apparel with coating printing and flock printing, adhesive interlining, dark coloured polyester fibre fabrics. Long-term apparels with dangerous levels of formaldehyde may lead to dermatitis, pruritus and other symptoms even cause infection, fester and cancer, especially underwear and other apparels that come into direct contact with human bodies,

The continuative violations urge Shanghai Authority to raise the sampling proportion for HERMES garments. According to statistics, Shanghai Authority has intercepted 598 batches of imported garments worth at USD 4.3256 million as they violated against safety and hygiene items at the port.

Besides formaldehyde, the major quality problems for garments also lie in: colour fastness, pH values, fibre contents and labels. The inspection shows labels of HERMES suit pants and shirts do not comply with relevant standards.

C&K Testing advises consumers should confirm that the products are free from hazardous substances instead of going for imported products. Besides, importers should send their products for testing to ensure safety requirements of national standards in China.
