California proposes maximum dose level for ethylene glycol

California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has proposed a maximum allowable dose level (MADL) of 8,700 micrograms per day for oral exposure to ethylene glycol.
 
Ethylene glycol was listed (https://chemicalwatch.com/24219/) as a reproductive toxicant under Proposition 65 effective 19 June 2015. Once finalised, the MADL will represent the safe harbour exposure limit. Below this a Prop 65 warning is not required.
 
The substance is used in the synthesis of polyester compounds and is present in a variety of consumer products, including:

• ballpoint pens;
• automotive anti-freeze;
• paints; and
• plastics.

 
The proposed MADL is based on the monograph for ethylene glycol published by the National Toxicology Program, Center for the Evaluation of Risks to Human Reproduction (NTP-CERHR), plus additional studies since completed.
 
Comments on the proposal will be accepted until 23 May. A public hearing may be scheduled, on request.
