Shenzhen Wenjin Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau destroyed a batch of unqualified food contact materials imported from Japan on 26 August. The products include squeezers, ice cubes with the total weight of 140kg valued at HKD 3,624.

When the goods arrived at the bank, relevant staff selected some samples to the lab for testing of safety and hygiene items based on inspection on appearance and Chinese identification. Upon testing, two type of evaporites (n-hexane) were 33.8 mg/L and 53 mg/L respectively, both of which were higher than the limit 30mg/L as stipulated in GB 9688-1988 Hygienic standard for polypropyrene products used as food containers and tablewares.

Evaporite is a hygienic index of vital importance, which reflects the chemicals separate out when food contact materials contact with water, vinegar, alcohol, oil and other liquids. The higher the index is, the more dissolution will be, indicating the greater hazard to human bodies.
