The European Food Safety Authority's food contact materials panel (Cef) has found the substance adipic acid dihydrazide safe for use in food contact materials (FCMs) upon assessment, given its migration does not exceed 0.05 mg/kg of food.

Adipic acid dihydrazide, CAS No 1071-93-8, FCM substance No 987 for use as a crosslinker for acrylic polymer with keto side groups coated on polyolefins and adhesives in laminates made from plastics. The substance is toxic and will lead to water pollution if in mass use.

According to the panel, adipic acid dihydrazide is safe if it is used as a crosslinker for coatings in inner layers of plastics laminates, which are not in direct contact with food, given its migration does not exceed 0.05 mg/kg of food.
