Xiamen Dongdu Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (Fujian Province, China) publicised that a batch of spoons and chopsticks for child use due to dangerous levels of nickel were destroyed under its supervision on 25 February 2016.

The information revealed that the spoons and chopsticks (weight: 720kg, value: USD 1,426.45) were made of stainless steel. According to the lab result, nickel present in those goods is 0.3mg/dm2 , non-compliant with the nickel requirement (limit: no less than 0.1mg/dm2) set forth in GB 9684-2011 National Standard for Food SafetyStainless Steel Products.

Nickel is one of essential elements for human bodies, however, the demand for nickel is quite minor. It can injure liver and cardio-pulmonary function even causing serious dermatitis and skin allergy, once found to exceed the limit.

Products can be imported to China when conforming to Chinese hygienic and safety standards. Otherwise, they can be destroyed or returned by competent authorities. C&K Testing advises businesses should choose accredited testing body for product testing to check conformity.
