EU issues consultation on new limits for the release of meta
Currently the limits for the release of metals from ceramic materials and articles into food are set out by Council Directive 84/500/EEC1. Under this Directive, only Lead and Cadmium are regulated. The current limits in force are 0.3 mg/l food for cadmium and 4 mg/l food for lead.
To achieve some certain objectives such as protecting the health of the consumers the Commission has adopted a two phase approach:
– In the first phase new limits for lead and cadmium will be laid down in a new measure under Article (5) of Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food7. This new measure will supersede the current Directive.
– In the second phase other objectives including new limits for metals other than lead and cadmium and materials other than ceramic materials (notably glass) will be investigated.
In the context of the first phase, the Commission considers to propose the values of 5 μg/kg food for the release of cadmium into food and of 10 μg/kg food for lead as
new limits.
