Lead levels in most batteries exceed German thresholds

Levels of lead in batteries frequently exceed levels set by German regulations, according to a study by Germany’s Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, funded by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA).

The institute tested the compliance of commercially available batteries against German limits for heavy metal content, as outlined in a batteries act. Mercury and cadmium levels generally fell within limits while lead concentrations exceeded “labelling thresholds” in most types of batteries.
