France proposes BPA as SVHC

Pubdate : 2016-02-25 Source : Chemical Watch Writer : CIRS
The French REACH competent authority plans to submit a proposal to ECHA by 8 August that bisphenol A (BPA) should be classified as an SVHC. The grounds will be that it is an endocrine disruptor and a CMR.

An entry to this effect has been added to ECHA's registry of intentions, but no other details are given.

Three years ago France introduced a ban on the use of BPA in all food contact materials. Since then, the French Constitutional Court has partially lifted the ban removing it from the manufacture and export of FCMs containing BPA. However it maintained a prohibition on the placing of such products on the French market.

The country’s endocrine disruptors strategy, adopted in 2014, promised to to eliminate BPA in thermal paper and encourage its removal from toys.

C&K Testing reminds you that the BPA restriction under EU Directive 2009/48/EC Safety for Toys has applied since 21 December 2015 when the BPA migration in toys to be placed on the EU market cannot exceed 0.1 mg/l.

Once BPA is identified as an SVHC in the candidate list, manufacturers and suppliers should fulfil the obligation of notification and information communication. C&K Testing advises businesses to track on the candidate list publicised by ECHA.
