The Washington state House of Representatives has approved legislation that would ban the use of two flame retardants in children’s products and residential furniture, beginning on 1 July 2014 (CW 8 February 2013). The substances are tris (2-chloroethyl)phosphate (TCEP) and tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl)phosphate (TDCPP).
The measure (HB 1294) would also require that any replacement chemicals meet certain safety criteria. It passed by a 53-44 vote and now goes to the state Senate for consideration.
If HB 1294 is to advance in the 2013 legislative session, it must pass the Senate Environment Committee by 3 April.
