13 February, 2019, WTO released the notice related to the “Draft Thai Industrial Standard for Melamine-formaldehyde, Urea-formaldehyde and Melamine-urea-formaldehyde Utensils for Food: Safety Requirements (TIS 2921-25XX (20XX))”. This draft standard covers food utensils made of thermoset plastic with the polymerization of formaldehyde. It specifies definitions, materials, safety requirements, packaging, marking and labelling, sampling and testing. The final date for comments is April 14, 2019.

The draft standard will cover the following resins if adopted:

Melamine-formaldehyde (MF)

Melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF)

Urea-formaldehyde (UF)

Formaldehyde (specific migration) – ≤ 15 mg/kg using method in Article 8.5

Nine heavy metals (specific migration) using method in Article 8.4:

Aluminum – ≤ 1 mg/kg

Barium – ≤ 1 mg/kg

Cobalt – ≤ 0.05 mg/kg

Copper – ≤ 5 mg/kg

Iron – ≤ 48 mg/kg

Lithium – ≤ 0.6 mg/kg

Manganese – ≤ 0.6 mg/kg

Nickel – ≤ 0.02 mg/kg
