RoHS 2.0 reevaluates cadmium exemptions

October 30, the RoHS project (Pack 10) reevaluated the two cadmium exemptions which failed to be passed in 2013. The consultation period lasts for 10 weeks and ends on 8 January 2016.

The two exemptions of the consultation, both dealing with cadmium quantum dot applications, were first evaluated in 2013. However, both requests were objected as no information that had submitted could sufficiently certify the necessity for two exemptions at that time.

In May 2015, the European Union received a report, claiming to reevaluate the feasibility of two exemptions. So the project begins consultation as below:

Exemption No.Annex III formulationApplicant
2013-2Cadmium in colour converting II-VI LEDs (< 10 μg Cd per mm2 of light-emitting area) for use in solid state illumination or display systems (Request for renewal of exemption 39 of Annex III of Directive 2011/65/EU);QD Vision Inc.
2013-5Cadmium in LCD Quantum Dot Light Control Films and Components
3M Optical Systems Division

The RoHS Directive of the European Union covers an extensive scope of products, including almost all of electronic and electrical equipment, medical devices, telecommunications equipment, toys and security information products. It not only include finished products, but also spare parts, raw materials and packaging intended for the production of the finished products, thus closely associated with the entire production chain.

Reminder: RoHS exemptions are of vital importance to the electronic and electrical equipment intended for export in the European Union. It is advisable for relevant companies to track RoHS-related news to make preparation ahead of time. C&K Testing will keep an eye on relevant news and share you with the latest information.
