[RAPEX] Overview of RAPEX notifications in July 2015

According to statistics of July (from 26th week to 30th week) in 2015, there are 182 cases notified in Rapex (The Rapid Alert System for Non-Food Products) in total, including 110 Chinese products (accounting for 48.8%). The percent is decreased by 11.64% compared with that in last month.

The product categories notified through the RAPEX system in July were:
•Toys (44 notifications, 24.18%)
•Apparel, footwear & fashion items (31 notifications, 17.03%)
•Motor vehicles (25 notifications, 13.74%)
•Electrical appliances and equipment (21 notifications, 11.54%)
•Childcare articles (12 notifications, 6.59%)
•Cosmetics (10 notifications, 5.49%)
•Lighting equipment (8 notifications, 4.40%)
•Chemical products (4 notifications, 2.20%)
•Protective equipment (4 notifications, 2.20%)
•Lighting chains (4 notifications, 2.20%)
•Other(3 notifications, 1.65%)
•Communication media (3 notifications, 1.65%)
•Furniture (3 notifications, 1.65%)
•Jewellery (2 notifications, 1.10%)
•Building products (2 notifications, 1.10%)
•Mechanical equipments (2 notifications, 1.10%)
•Decorative articles (2 notifications, 1.10%)
•Pressure vessels (1 notification, 0.55%)
•Laser pointers (1 notification, 0.55%)
•Entertainment/sports equipment (1 notification, 0.55%)

Among the above, toys are most frequently notified products in July due to chemical hazard caused by phthalates and choking caused by small parts. Next to toys, apparel, footwear & fashion items are mainly notified due to chemical hazards and injuries caused by AZO dye, chloroform and chromium (VI). And motor vehicles are in the third place due to injuries or fire hazards.

The fourteen risk categories notified through the RAPEX system in July were:
•Chemical (39 notifications, 21.43%)
•Injuries (38 notifications, 20.88%)
•Electrical shock (31 notifications, 17.03%)
•Choking (26 notifications, 14.29%)
•Fire (16 notifications,8.79%)
•Burns (3 notifications, 1.65%)
•Damage to sight (3 notifications, 1.65%)
•Cuts (3 notifications, 1.65%)
•Suffocation (3 notifications, 1.65%)
•Strangulation (2 notifications, 1.10%)
•Environmental hazard (1 notification, 0.55%)
•Drowning (1 notification, 0.55%)
•Microorganism (1 notification, 0.55%)
•Damage to hearing (1 notification, 0.55%)

As shown above, chemical, injuries and electrical shock are still the top 3 risks.

Reminders: businesses shall test their products for regulation compliance if necessary so as to reduce economic losses resulting from recalls.
