Norway proposes extending acrylamide ban to grouting and sea

The Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency (Klif) is proposing to implement the EU ban on acrylamide on Dec. 17, 2012. Norway already bans the use of acrylamide for sealing water leaks, but the EU ban would extend this to grouting and other sealing purposes.

Klif welcomes feedback on the proposal until 15 February 2013. it is known that acrylamide has been presented in candidate list of very high concern for authorization as its carcinogenic and mutagenic properties.

Acrylamide is almost exclusively used for the synthesis of polyacrylamides, which are used in various applications, in particular in waste water treatment and paper processing. Minor uses of acrylamide comprise the preparation of polyacrylamide gels for research purposes and as a grouting agent in civil.
