[RAPEX] Overview of RAPEX notifications in August 2015

According to statistics of August (from 31st week to 34th week) in 2015, there are 117 cases notified in Rapex (The Rapid Alert System for Non-Food Products) in total, including 71 Chinese products (accounting for 60.68%). The percent is increased by 11.88% compared with that in last month.
The product categories notified through the RAPEX system in August were:
•Toys (39 notifications, 33.33%)
•Apparel, footwear & fashion items (19 notifications, 16.24%)
•Motor vehicles(19 notifications, 16.24%)
•Electronic and electrical equipment (11 notifications, 9.40%)
•Lighting equipment (5 notifications, 4.27%)
•Chemical products (4 notifications, 3.42%)
•Child care articles (3 notifications, 2.56%)
•Building products (3 notifications, 2.56%)
•Lighting chains (3 notifications, 2.56%)
•Cosmetics (2 notifications, 1.71%)
•Entertainment/sports equipment (2 notifications, 1.71%)
•Protective equipment (2 notifications, 1.71%)
•Decorative articles (1 notification, 0.85%)
•Furniture (1 notification, 0.85%)
•Natural gas equipment (1 notification, 0.85%)
•Lighters (1 notification, 0.85%)
•Other (1 notification, 0.85%)
Among the above, toys are most frequently notified products in August due to chemical hazard caused by phthalates and choking caused by small parts. Apparel, footwear & fashion items and motor vehicles are next to toys.
The former is mainly notified due to strangulation caused by incompliance drawstrings, chemical hazards and injuries caused by AZO dye, chloroform and chromium (VI). And motor vehicles are notified due to injuries or fire hazards.
Electronic and electrical equipment comes the third, accounting for 9.40% of the notified products. The reason for notification is hazard for electric shock and hazard.
The ten risk categories notified through the RAPEX system in August were:
•Chemical (36 notifications, 30.77%)
•Injuries (34 notifications, 29.06%)
•Choking (23 notifications, 19.66%)
•Electrical shock (13 notifications, 11.11%)
•Fire (10 notifications,8.55%)
•Strangulation (8 notifications,6.84%)
•Burns (3 notifications, 2.56%)
•Suffocation (2 notifications, 1.71%)
•Damage to sight (1 notifications, 0. 85%)
•Cuts (1 notifications, 0.85%)
As shown above, chemical, injuries and choking are still the top 3 risks.
Reminders: businesses shall test their products for regulation compliance if necessary so as to reduce economic losses resulting from recalls.
