ASTM International has published a new standard test method for identifying a range of phthalates used as plasticisers, and prohibited in certain products under EU and US regulations.
An ASTM sub-committee on analytical methods developed the test method (ASTM D7823), which uses thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify a range of phthalates, including:
- DBP, 1,2-benzenedicarboxylicacid;
- BBP, benzyl butyl phthalate;
- DEHP, bis(2-ethyhexyl) phthalate;
- DNOP, di(n-dioctyl) phthalate;
- DINP, 1,2-benzenedicarboxylicacid, di-C8-10-branched alkyl esters;
- DIDP, 1,2-benzenedicarboxylicacid, di-C9-11-branched alkyl esters.
The sub-committee now plans an inter-laboratory study on the test method. It will also start work on a solvent extraction GC-MS method for the phthalates and has plans to create a GC-MS library.
