Maine BPA ban in children's products takes effect

The state of Maine has finalised its designation of bisphenol A (BPA) as a priority chemical, and the rule is now effective.
The rule followed the Maine Board of Environmental Protection’s action on a citizen’s petition that sought to ban BPA from infant formula, baby and toddler food packaging.
The rule applies to manufacturers who sell children’s products in Maine, containing intentionally added BPA. From 1 March 2014, the use of BPA will be prohibited in infant formula and baby food packaging sold in the state. Manufacturers of toys, childcare articles or tableware will also be required to report on the use of BPA in their products, no later than 180 days after the rule takes effect.
The proposed rule would amend both routine technical and major substantive provisions of rule. Accordingly, the hearing will be a joint hearing before the Board and the Commissioner.
