16 August, 2018, the Netherlands RIVM proposed a restriction on the concentration limit of eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in granules and mulches used in synthetic turf pitches, or in loose forms at playgrounds and other sports facilities.
This regulation is aiming to lower the human health risk for professional football players (including goalkeepers), children playing on the pitches and on playgrounds, as well as workers installing and maintaining the pitches and playgrounds. The proposal suggests a combined concentration limit for the eight PAHs of 17 mg/kg (0.0017 % by weight).
The general limit of the eight PAHs in the REACH regulation annex XIV (entry 28) is as follows:
Substances | CAS Number | EC Number | Concentration Limit |
Benzo [a] pyrene(BaP) | 50-32-8 | 200-028-5 | 100 mg/kg |
Benzo [e] pyrene(BeP) | 192-97-2 | 205-892-7 | 1000 mg/kg |
Benzo [a] anthracene(BaA) | 56-55-3 | 200-280-6 | 1000 mg/kg |
Chrysene (CHR) | 218-01-9 | 205-923-4 | 1000 mg/kg |
Benzo [b] fluoranthene(BbFA) | 205-99-2 | 205-991-9 | 1000 mg/kg |
Benzo [k] fluoranthene(BkFA) | 207-08-9 | 205-916-6 | 1000 mg/kg |
Benzo [j] fluoranthene(BjFA) | 205-82-3 | 205-910-3 | 1000 mg/kg |
Dibenzo [a,h] anthracene(DBAhA) | 53-70-3 | 200-181-8 | 100 mg/kg |
