Germany removes substance from recommended food contact mate

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has removed anthraquinone, a category 2 carcinogen, from its list of recommended food contact materials (FCM).

The removal of the substance – which is used in the production of paper and cardboard – forms part of a wider update of the BfR's database of food contact materials. The list is not legally binding, but reflects the institute's understanding of current scientific and technical knowledge.

The BfR is now in the process of collecting further data and evaluating studies, and will lobby ECHA for a harmonised categorisation of the health hazards posed by the substance under REACH.
