EU includes BPA restriction in thermal paper under REACH Annex XVII

On 13 December 2016, the Official Journal of the European Union publishes Regulation (EU) 2016/2235 to include BPA restriction in Annex XVII to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH Regulation). The new restriction sets forth a threshold limit of 0,02 %(by weight) for Bisphenol A (BPA) present in thermal paper after 2 January 2020.

In Annex XVII to REACH Regulation, the following new entry is added:

Shall not be placed on the market in thermal paper in a concentration equal to or greater than 0,02 % by weight after 2 January 2020.

The Regulation shall enter into force on the twentieth day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union and it applies since 2 January 2020. Also, it allows a 36-month period for manufacturers and importers to fulfill the new requirements.
