EU Ask for Opinion on zinc Oxide Coatings in Cosmetics Products

The European Commission has requested an Opinion from its Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) on three zinc oxide coatings for use as UV filters in dermally applied cosmetics. SCCS is to deliver the Opinion before March 2020.

The three substances are as follows:

  1. methicone with a maximum concentration of 3%.
  2. methicone with a maximum concentration of 3% when applied in combination with 8% silica.
  3. isostearic acid with a maximum concentration of 4% when applied in combination with 2% triethoxycaprylylsilane.

According to EU cosmetic regulations, Zinc Oxide is authorized as a colorant in annex IV and a UV filter in annex VI.
