EU amends limit for BPA in toys

On 25 May,2017, EU publishes the toy safety amendment(EU) 2017/898, which lowers the migration limit for bisphenol A (BPA) in toys for use by children under 36 months or in other toys intended to be placed in the mouth. The amendment will come into effect on the 20th day after the official journal published.

On 18 July, 2016, The European Commission submitted the G/TBT/N/EU/396 notification to the WTO, aim at the toys for children under three and toys intended to be placed in the mouth, to further reduce the limit of bisphenol A (BPA) to enhance the safety of children. For More details about it, please refer to the C&K report in August 2016. November 2016, the EU member states have voted to pass the relevant limited adjustment proposal. According to (EU) 2017/898 in Appendix C to Annex II to Directive 2009/48/EC, the entry for bisphenol A is replaced by following:

The above requirements will have been implemented since November 26, 2018, and Member States should adopt the relevant laws, regulations or administrative regulations before that date.
