ECHA Restricts PAHS in Granules and Mulches
Published: Author: Visits: 1240

18 September 2019,The ECHA European commission has issued a notice to restrict eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in granules and mulches used in synthetic turf pitches and playgrounds. The Commission will consider whether the conditions for the restriction are met, prepare a draft restriction measure to amend the list of restricted substances in REACH Regulation (Annex XVII) and submit it to Member States in the REACH Committee.

The eight PAHs are as follows:

Substance

CAS number

EC number

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)

50-32-8

200-028-5

Benzo[e]pyrene (BeP)

192-97-2

200-181-8

Benzo[a]anthracene (BaA)

56-55-3

200-280-6

Chrysen (CHR)

218-01-9

205-923-4

Benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbFA)

205-99-2

205-910-3

Benzo[j]fluoranthene (BjFA)

205-82-3

205-911-9

Benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkFA)

207-08-9

205-916-6

Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene (DBAhA)

53-70-3

205-892-7

All of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been identified as carcinogens, The proposal would reduce the total concentration limit for eight PAHs to 20mg/kg (0.002% by weight), which is closer to the limit for individual PAHs in articles supplied to the general public (entry 50 of REACH Restrictions list). The concentration limits for PAHs in mixtures supplied to the general public are currently set at 100 mg/kg or 1 000 mg/kg for each of the substances.

The restriction aims to reduce the risk of cancer for people exposed to (inhaled and skin contact) particles and coverings by PAHs, such as soccer players, children playing on the field or playground, and workers installing and maintaining the field and these items.
