On 31 December 2015, General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China (AQSIQ) and Standardisation Administration of the People's Republic of China published Announcement No. 43 of 2015 on national standards announcing the release of the new standard GB/T 22048-2015 Determination of certain phthalate esters in toys and children's products, which superseded GB/T 22048-2008 to apply on 1 January 2016. In the meanwhile, other standards on apparel and footwear were also published.

GB/T 22048 provides for the determination method for specific phthalates in toys and children’s products. Generally speaking, the testing of other phthalates shall be subject to the standard as well. The original standard was known as GB/T 22048-2008 Toys and Children’s Products—Determination of Phthalates in Polyvinyl Chloride Plastics applicable to toys and children’s products containing PVC. This update has renamed the standard to expand its scope.
