In October 31st, the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) published the National Standard of the P.R.C., Children's Furniture - General Technical Requirements (GB 28007-2011) for the protection of children’s health and safety. The standard with 25 pages which covered the Furniture intended for use by children of 3 - 14 years old (ICS: 97.140) has implemented in Aug. 1. Chapters 5, 6 of this standard are mandatory, the rest are recommended. The mandatory contents are the safety requirements and warning signs for furniture intended for use by children of 3~14 years old. The safety requirements refer to structural safety, the limit of the hazard or poisonous material and flame retardant request.

The hazardous projection, sharp edge and sharp point are not allowed in the products. The limits for heavy metals in children's furniture are the same to the requests of Safety of toys Part 3: Migration of certain elements which issued by the European Committee for Standardization. What's more the standard sets different limits for free formaldehyde, AZO dyes, phthalate according to the different materials (see the table below).

The flame retardant safety of the household upholstered furniture should meet the standard GB 17927.1, while the upholstered furniture for public use should be in line with the request of the standard GB 17927.2.

The National Standard of the P.R.C., Children's Furniture - General Technical Requirements are the first mandatory content for children's furniture. The published standard has filled in the gaps in the quality requirements and detection methods of the domestic and international children's furniture.
