Canada proposed to revise the Cribs, Cradles and Bassinet Regulation (SOR/2010-261). The proposed revisions were published into the Canada Gazette Part I, Notices and Proposed Regulations, Volume 149 (2015) on 25 July 2015.

The current Cribs, Cradles and Bassinet Regulation (SOR/2010-261) has been effective since 18 Nov. 2010. This proposal is to address other risks beyond its regulation. Traditional drop side cribs have exhibited hazards associated with hardware issues and are therefore banned as a result of this proposal. Apart from that, the proposal make reference to existing safety standards for Cribs, Cradles and Bassinet in the United States for further coordination.

The proposed Crib, Cradle and Bassinet Regulation include the following;
• A prohibition on the sale of traditional drop side cribs
• An update to the structural integrity test for mattress supports
• An added test for crib slat strength
• Inclusion of performance requirements for key structural elements
• Test requirements for accessories such as add-on changing tables
• Performance requirements for sleep accessories and stands
• Completely bounded openings requirements for mesh or pliable products
• A revision to the current corner post requirements
• Inclusion of a stability performance test
• Requirements prohibiting occupant restraints

Stakeholders can comment on the draft within 75 days since its publishing in the Canada Gazette. The consultation period ends on 8 Oct. 2015.
