Brazil Restricts the Content of Lead in School Materials and Products

21 March, 2018, Brazil government passed a law to restrict the lead on in products and materials used in buildings visited by children.

The content of lead (by weight) in the manufacturing, sale or import of the following products shall not over 0.06 %:

1. Children's paint, varnish, enamel or similar material used in toys and articles that have a "playful purpose";

2. Inks used for writing or drawing, or other educational activities;

3. Paint applied to the exterior and interior of non-industrial buildings, including latex paint and enamel;

4. Varnish used for interiors and exteriors for protection and decoration of wood and concrete and "other materials";

5. Similar materials used for surface coating – those applied to buildings with the aim of protecting, preparing or surface finishing, including primers and sealers and waterproofing agents.

Paints, varnishes and similar surface coating materials are exempted for the following purposes:

1. Agricultural and industrial equipment and commercial metal structures;

2. Traffic signaling and security activities and equipment;

3. Motor vehicles, planes, boats and trains;

4. Graphic design drawings;

5. Household appliances and metal furniture.

In addition, the ink used in art and graphic design is also exempted.

Products with excess lead content will be destroyed and disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.
